CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Rafe waited for Emma to run away. He waited for her to tear out of the room as fast as she could, and for her to never look back. That would be the best outcome for everyone. Or alternatively…he waited for her to scream.

And for her to end her life.

She would be dead very soon anyway. She might as well end it now. Indeed, he had brought her here with the intention of killing her. Of leading her down into his basement and letting his infestation feed upon her and be done with her.

But he found himself suddenly unable to do so. Not because he wasn’t carrying his switchblade in his pocket, and not because he wasn’t perfectly capable of slitting her throat. No, perhaps the word wasn’t unable, but unwilling.

There was no point in denying that he was oddly captivated by her. If he had not been about to lose control of the Things that dwelled within him, he would have eagerly taken her up on her invitation and crawled into bed with her last night.

He wanted her quite badly. But she was more than just a pretty face—if that were the case, he could ignore her as he did all the pretty faces he saw during his life. No. She was witty, clever, brash, and there was a wildness about her that was enthralling. She had traveled the world, seen places he could not imagine. There was a kind of wisdom in her, even with her playful, youthful demeanor.

There were shadows in her eyes. There was a darkness in her that wanted to consume her, much the same as her brother. But where Elliot surrendered to the whispers of his illness, Emma fought back against them with her own blazing light.

And sarcasm, apparently.

He still would not forgive her for giving a Crawling Terror the moniker of “Jim.” It was as insulting as it was amusing. But it would have to go down on record as one of the oddest reactions to one of the creatures of the Great Beast that he had ever seen. It was endearing in its own odd way.

But Emma did not run away. Nor did she scream.

She simply sat there and stared at the Things that infested the shadows around them. Her eyes were wide, and the color had drained from her cheeks. She watched them as they writhed, reaching for her, straining to get closer. The light from the bulbs and the sunlight from the window kept them from obtaining their goal, however.

For better or worse.

“I am a monster, Miss Mather. Make no mistake.” He held his hand over the desk, casting a shadow, and watched as the Things wriggled around the darkness, like tapered worms from a bloated corpse. “I am no better than…eh…Jim.” It hurt to say the moniker. “Indeed, I may be worse. I wear the face of a man in the daylight.”

She swallowed thickly. She didn’t take her eyes off the wriggling darkness. Finally, after a long pause, she spoke.
